The process of creating an agentless backup account on HCI is as follows:

Step 1.Log in to HCI using the admin account.

Step 2.Go to System > Administrators and Permissions.

Step 3.Click the Permissions tab and click New. In the Add New Permissions pop-up window, specify a permission policy name, such as agentless_backup, and select the permissions as needed.

(1)Click the + icon next to Compute and select Configure VM and Use virtual machines. If these permissions are not selected, you cannot use the agentless backup account to perform operations on VMs.

(2)Click the + icon next to Networking and select Add connections. If this permission is not selected, you cannot use the agentless backup account to connect VMs to switches or other virtual network devices.

(3)Click the + icon next to Storage and select Manage datastore. If this permission is not selected, you cannot use the agentless backup account to add or delete datastores.

(4)Click the + icon next to Disks and select Access disks. If this permission is not selected, you cannot use the agentless backup account to mount disks to VMs.

Step 4.Click the Administrator tab and click Add New Account. In the New Account pop-up window, select System Admin for Role.

(1)Enter the basic information of the system admin.

(2)Click Settings next to Resource Permissions & Quota. In the Resource Permissions & Quota pop-up window, configure resource permissions.

A. On the Physical Resources tab, select all datastores in All Resources > Storage, and select the policy created in Step 3 for Permissions, as shown in Figure 2‑20. If the datastores are not selected, the agentless backup account will lack permissions to create VMs on the datastores.

B. On the Virtual Resources tab, select the necessary VMs in All Resources > VM and select the policy created in Step 3 for Permissions, as shown in Figure 2‑21. If no VMs are selected, you cannot use the agentless backup account to view or back up VMs.

C. On the Resource Quota tab, configure the CPU, memory, and storage resources allocated to the agentless backup account. Insufficient resource quotas may result in VM creation failures.

The backup account is created.

Note: Only the system admin can perform agentless backup on HCI 6.10.0.
