Take note of the following items during agentless backup:
- Agentless backup is not supported for component VMs, VM templates, NFV VMs, placeholder VMs, VMs with Turbo mode enabled, and backup proxy VMs.
- Agentless backup is not supported for VMs with internal disk based snapshots. You can use the OpenAPI to obtain a list of all snapshots for a VM and identify whether they are internal disk based snapshots.
- Backup may fail on VMs in transitional states (such as those in migration) or VMs with data errors (such as those with missing disks).
- If a VM is associated with the built-in backup policies, CDP policies, or disaster recovery policies on SCP or HCI, when the corresponding operations are being performed on the VM, backup tasks initiated by third-party backup apps for the VM will be interrupted. It is recommended to use either a third-party backup app or the built-in backup feature of SCP or HCI.
- The third-party backup apps should create an obvious name and description to indicate that the snapshot is automatically created during the backup.
- Backup cannot be performed for the physical disks (including Oracle RAC shared disks), USB drives of VMs and virtual shared disks (including VS storage, iSCSI storage, and FC storage), nor for the iSCSI and NAS storage volumes mounted to the VM.
- For an encrypted VM, if the data read during backup is ciphertext (including NBDSSL and HotAdd transport modes). As a result, only in-place recovery to the original VM within the same cluster is supported.
- Data can be recovered only when the VM is powered off.
- During quick recovery, ensure that the disk provisioning mode of the newly created VM is set to thin provisioning. Otherwise, the base image of the VM disk will fail to be changed.
- During quick recovery, the root user must be configured with read and write permissions on the NFS datastore. Otherwise, the NFS datastore will fail to be mounted.
- In the HotAdd transport mode, the backup proxy VM must be powered on to perform disk hot-add operations; when the backup proxy VM is powered off, the already hot-added disks will be automatically deleted.
- The maximum number of disks that can be hot-added to a backup proxy VM at the same time is limited by the maximum number of disks that can be added to a VM: HCI 6.10 series supports a maximum of 16 disks, and HCI 6.11 series and later versions support a maximum of 64 disks.
- The following operations are not allowed on the backup proxy VM itself:Convert to encrypted VM, added to Snapshot Policy, added to Scheduled Backup Proxy, added to Backup Copy Policy, added to CDP Policy, added to Consistency Group, add to Disaster Recovery Policy, perform local backup, perform CDP backup, perform agentless backup, enable Turbo mode, enable CBT.
