DR is time-sensitive. In addition, the functions of HCI also rely on the platform time. It is recommended to sync the time of HCI with SCP.
Method 1: If the customer has an NTP server, connect to the NTP server of the customer or the public NTP server. Method 2: If no NTP server is available, sync time with a certain platform, such as VMs > HCI > SCP. Make sure that the system clocks of VMs, HCI, and SCP are synced.
Prerequisites
The HCI platform and SCP VMs are deployed as expected. To sync time with the NTP server, make sure that the networks of SCP and NTP server are connected.
Connection to NTP Server
Procedure
Log in to the HCI platform and go to System > Date and Language.
Select Sync with NTP server, enter the address of the NTP server, and click Save.
In the Guest Time Sync with This Platform section, if the OS of the VM is already configured with an NTP server, do not select Periodic sync. Sync the time of the VM with the NTP server. If no NTP server is configured for the OS of the VM, you can select Periodic sync.
Log in to the SCP platform and go to Resources > System > System > Date and Time.
Select Sync with NTP server, enter the address of the NTP server, and click Save.
Do not select Sync cluster time with SCP because the HCI platform is already synced with the NTP server. Guest Time Sync with Cluster is equivalent to Guest Time Sync with This Platform on the HCI platform. To avoid time inconsistency, configure dedicated sync rules that are not distributed by SCP for HCI clusters, or configure global sync rules on SCP.
Guest Time Sync with Cluster on SCP is equivalent to Guest Time Sync with This Platform rules configured for different HCI clusters on SCP. After you configure Guest Time Sync with Cluster, the system prompts the following message: "The settings will apply to all VMs that are installed with vmTools and configured to regularly sync guest time with node."
Time Sync through SCP (Without NTP Server)
Procedure
Log in to the HCI platform and go to System > Date and Language. Keep the default settings. This means that you do not need to configure an NTP server or sync rule in the Guest Time Sync with This Platform section.
Log in to the SCP platform and go to Resources > System > System > Date and Time. During the first-time login, adjust the SCP time to sync with HCI.
Select Sync cluster time with SCP, select the cluster that you want to sync, and click Save.
In the pop-up window, select Sync Now. Note: When the time gap between SCP and VMs exceeds the threshold, the system time of the VMs will experience a sudden change, resulting in business error. You can modify the tinker panic parameters of NTP to adjust the threshold. The default threshold is 128 seconds in NTPv4. It is recommended to set the time properly during the initialization of SCP. To change the system time of production clusters, you need to follow the time change workflow.
Guest Time Sync with Cluster is equivalent to Guest Time Sync with This Platform on HCI. When no NTP server is available, configure global sync rules on SCP to avoid time inconsistency. Whether to enable periodic sync depends on whether the VMs are time-sensitive. If yes, enable periodic sync.
