Virtual Switch Configuration

{{ $t('productDocDetail.updateTime') }}: 2025-12-26

Introduction

You can configure the port group, VLAN, and other settings of each virtual switch in the network topology to implement network isolation and traffic control. The configuration can be completed in the edit mode in Networking > Topology, without the need to navigate to other pages.

Constraints and Restrictions

The VLAN ID range of a virtual switch is 1-4094, and it must be consistent with the VLAN configuration of the corresponding physical switch. Otherwise, network connectivity issues will occur.

To delete a port group that is associated with a VM or router, remove the association first.

Distributed virtual switches support only L2 forwarding and do not support L3 routing. They need to be used together with routers to enable cross-subnet communication.

Prerequisites

A virtual switch has been dragged to the topology canvas and is in normal status.

Port group and VLAN settings (such as VLAN 10 for the business network segment and VLAN 20 for the management network segment) have been planned.

Precautions

For easy identification, the port group name must reflect the use of the VLAN (Example: VLAN10 - Business Port Group).

To configure a Trunk port group, ensure that the type of the corresponding port on the physical switch is set to Trunk, and that the associated VLAN is allowed.

Steps

Step 1.Enter the topology edit mode, click the target virtual switch, and click Settings in the lower-right corner. The Settings pop-up window appears.

Step 2.Click the VLANs in VM Network tab and configure the fields as instructed in the table below:

Field

Description

Operation Suggestion

Name

Specify a custom port group name that reflects the use of the VLAN.

Format: VLAN ID - Use (Example: VLAN10 - Web Business)

Type

Select the type of the port group. Valid values: Access (One VLAN) and Trunk (Multiple VLANs).

For services in a single network segment, select Access (One VLAN). For services in multiple network segments, select Trunk (Multiple VLANs).

VLAN ID

If Type is set to Access (One VLAN), enter a single VLAN ID. If Type is set to Trunk (Multiple VLANs), enter a VLAN range (Example: 2-100).

Enter a value based on your business requirements. Example: Enter 10 when Type is set to Access (One VLAN), or enter 2-100 when Type is set to Trunk (Multiple VLANs).

PVID

The default VLAN ID of the port. This field is required if Type is set to Trunk (Multiple VLANs).

Enter the default VLAN ID of the port in Trunk mode (Example: 1). The value must be consistent with the VLAN ID of the physical switch.

Step 3.Click OK to add the port group. Repeat steps 1-3 to create multiple port groups.

Step 4.To modify or delete a port group, find the port group in the port group list and click Edit or Delete in the Operation column. Click OK after the configuration is complete.

Step 5.Click Apply Changes to save the configuration and exit the topology edit mode.
