Distributed Virtual Switches

The Distributed Virtual Switch provides consistent network connectivity across all hosts in the cluster, presenting a unified management interface and enforcing consistent network policies throughout the entire virtual infrastructure. It automatically synchronizes port configurations, VLAN settings, and security policies across all participating hosts, ensuring virtual machines maintain consistent network behavior regardless of their physical location.

Edge Virtual Routers

These software-based routers deliver Layer 3 routing capabilities between virtual networks and external physical networks. They support dynamic routing protocols including OSPF and BGP, enabling seamless integration with existing network infrastructure. The edge routers also implement Network Address Translation services, distributed firewall policies, and VPN termination capabilities with a distributed architecture that eliminates central bottlenecks.

Edge Virtual Switches

Operating at the network perimeter, Edge Virtual Switches provide connectivity between virtual and physical workloads, specifically designed to handle north-south traffic. They support advanced networking features including VLAN trunking, link aggregation, and quality of service marking for traffic entering and leaving the virtual environment, working in coordination with edge routers to provide a complete network perimeter solution.
