Description
You can edit your VM to modify its configurations.
Precautions
- You can edit most hardware configurations of your VM when it is powered on. The following information can be edited when the VM is powered on:
• Basic information (except the datastore), CPU, memory, CD/DVD, serial port, USB, and other hardware
• VirtIO disk allocation type
• VirtIO disk and virtIO adapter deletion
• Huge-page memory
Changes to the following items take effect only after a restart of the VM:
• Basic information: HA, storage policy, run location, and operating system
• CPU: number of virtual sockets (hot deletion not supported), number of cores per socket, whether to enable the NUMA scheduler, whether to use the host CPU, whether to use the para-virtualized clock, and whether to enable CPU hot add
• Memory: memory size (hot deletion not supported), whether to enable huge-page memory, and whether to enable memory hot add
• Disk: allocation method (hot modification not supported) and whether VirtIO is supported
• NIC: Adapter model, MAC address, jumbo frame receiving, and others, where only the first three items are allowed for hot modification
• Hardware adding: CD/DVD (hot add not supported), serial port (hot modification supported but hot add not supported), NIC (hot add supported, with configurations taking effect immediately), IDE disk capacity expansion (hot add supported, with configurations taking effect immediately)
• Enable CPU/memory hot add: Indicate that you can manually add CPU and memory resources to a VM that is started. Note that this feature may be unsupported in some operating systems. Before you use the feature, view the list of supported operating systems. In addition, this feature requires installing vmTools on the VM. The option is available only when your VM is shut down or when you are creating a VM. After this option takes effect, you can edit the specifications of your VM when it is started, that is, increase the number of CPU sockets and the size of memory that is previously allocated.
• Other hardware: keyboard type, BIOS settings, and built-in GPU
Whether hot add is supported for the CPU, memory, disk, and NIC depends on the operating system. For more information, see section 5.1.1 "Create a VM."
- If raw disk mapping (RDM) is performed, do not hot swap mapped disks.
- You cannot export the .ova file to VMware if your Linux VM is started in UEFI mode.
- If vmTools is not installed, you can set Adapter Model to Virtio for Linux VMs but not for Windows VMs.
